Best Mushroom Supplements: A Complete Guide to Mushroom Supplement Benefits, Types, Dosage & Safety

By Kristen Carli, MS, RD

From powders and coffee to chocolates and gummies, mushroom supplements are everywhere!  In addition to the wide ranging product formats, each brand may offer different mushrooms in unique blends to suit certain health outcomes. With so many options available, you may be overwhelmed as to which are worth trying.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the various mushroom supplements on the market, explaining their potential health benefits, reviewing the recommended doses, and highlighting safety concerns for certain populations.

What are Mushroom Supplements?

Fungi have long been valued for their health benefits in traditional Eastern medicine. While the present-day culture is recognizing their value and they are becoming more popular, these benefits are nothing new. In fact, medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in places like China and Japan. Back then, mushrooms like turkey tail and reishi were believed to boost immune system strength as well as support longevity. At the time, they were incorporated into tinctures and teas as a part of a holistic preventive health routine.

In modern society, we can now reap these benefits through consumption of mushroom supplements, which are available in capsule, powder, and even chocolate forms. These supplements contain concentrated amounts of the mushroom extracts and fruiting bodies, providing us with an easy way to incorporate functional mushrooms into our daily routines.

Mushroom Supplement Benefits

So what can these mushrooms actually do for our health? In general, functional mushrooms support cognition, immunity, stress support, and energy. However, different mushrooms contain unique bioactive compounds and have subsequently varying effects in our bodies.

For example, the mushrooms chaga and reishi2 contain beta-glucans, which may support immune system function. Lion’s mane3, however, is particularly beneficial for brain health, having a role in memory and focus. Reishi, on the other hand, has been associated with stress response and a sense of calm; whereas cordyceps4 has been shown to support energy levels.

Regardless of your desired effect, it’s important to note that mushroom supplements are not a cure-all. Instead, they act as one piece of the puzzle when it comes to holistic health. Other factors like sleep, diet, and exercise are crucial parts of a healthy lifestyle that should not be ignored.

Types of Mushroom Supplements

After you’ve identified the particular mushroom that offers your desired effect, you then need to evaluate which form of supplement you want to take. There are many types of mushroom supplements available. From capsules and powders to chocolates and gummies, you can find a mushroom supplement that fits your needs.

When it comes to picking which type is best for you, consider what you will regularly take. As with any healthy habit, the benefits come from repeated daily use. In fact, the beneficial health effects of functional mushrooms may build gradually over time, meaning effects become more noticeable with consistent use5.

That’s why, at Alice, chocolate is our favorite format. Who doesn’t love an excuse to eat chocolate every day?! Additionally, research shows that the lipid content in chocolate may help to improve the absorption of these beneficial compounds6. In other words, the chocolate can encourage the mushrooms’ effectiveness.

How to Read Mushroom Supplement Labels

Supplements can vary widely in their potency and quality. Before you choose a mushroom supplement, make sure to carefully evaluate its nutrition label to ensure you are choosing a high quality product.

One thing to select is a brand that mentions specific types of mushrooms on ingredient labels, instead of “mushroom blends”. That way you know what’s actually inside and what effect you’re likely to achieve. Additionally, high quality products source mushrooms from the fruiting bodies, which are the actual mushrooms, instead of the mycelium, which are the roots. This is important as most of the bioactive compounds are found in the fruiting bodies themselves.

Lastly, watch out for fillers and additives. There are often a lot of unnecessary ingredients inside supplements, so make sure you know what you are consuming. In the case of mushroom chocolates and gummies, look out for added sugars. Because most of us get enough added sugars in our diets as it is, the added sugar in these daily bites can add up quite quickly. Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. Our alice mushroom chocolates contain 1 gram of added sugar per piece.

Recommended Dosage & Serving Sizes

In general, dosages can vary widely since each brand offers individual formulations. There isn’t one universal standard recommended dose for all mushroom supplements.

Instead, the appropriate serving size depends on factors like the type of mushroom used, whether it’s an extract or whole mushroom powder, and how concentrated the active compounds are in the product. Because of this, when choosing a dose to consume, it’s a good idea to always follow the recommended dosages on the product itself. These guidelines are based on the specific formulation and are designed to help ensure both safety and effectiveness.

For example, alice mushroom chocolates clearly list a suggested dose of one square per day.

What Not To Take with Mushroom Supplements

As with all supplements, it’s important to evaluate the other medications and supplements you consume in order to watch out for any contraindications. If you currently take blood thinners like aspirin or warfarin, you may not want to consume mushroom supplements as some mushrooms have blood thinning effects. Additionally, some mushroom supplements may interact with the effectiveness of immunosuppressant medications, so those on these prescriptions should consult a doctor. Likewise, some mushrooms can further lower blood pressure, so those on blood pressure medications should express caution.

Because of the limited data in these populations, those who are pregnant or have an autoimmune condition should avoid use of mushroom supplements. As always, before starting any new supplement or medication, talk to your healthcare provider.

Brainstorm contains fairly traded organic dark chocolate, organic Lion’s Mane and organic Cordyceps from 100% fruiting body mushrooms, guarana and phosphatidylserine. Each square contains 66mg of natural caffeine which is equivalent to ⅔ cup of coffee.

Vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and OU-D kosher certified.

Other ingredients: organic semi-sweet 72% dark chocolate (organic unsweetened chocolate, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter), coconut oil, cocoa butter

Allergens: Coconut, Soy
Processed on shared equipment and may contain peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, or soy.

Each bite of Brainstorm is formulated to boost cognitive function while also delivering an immediate boost to productivity and energy levels.

The long term benefits come from our functional mushrooms. Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps are felt over time — not instantly. When incorporated into a daily routine, the mushrooms’ nutrients compound in your body and become more effective (and noticeable) with sustained use.

Cordyceps works to boost blood oxygen levels to increase full body stamina, vitality, and energy. Lion’s Mane directly stimulates the nerve growth factor to improve memory, cognition, neuroplasticity, and brain health.

We also know that nothing beats instant gratification. That’s why we’ve added Guarana and Phosphaditylserine to our formula. Guarana is a caffeinated Brazilian berry that provides a smooth flow of energy, and Phosphaditylserine is a fatty acid that improves alertness, reaction time, thinking speed, and productivity throughout the day. Each square contains 66mg of natural caffeine which is equivalent to ⅔ cup of coffee.

The result: an indulgent daily routine that’s good for you and only gets better with time.

What to expect:

  • In 30 minutes, feel productive and energized
  • In 30 days, notice daily flow states, sustained energy and mental clarity
  • After 3 months, enjoy memory support, brain health, and daily energy

One square suits most.

Enjoy one dose of Brainstorm when you’re in need of a clean boost of energy. Those looking for a stronger, more prolonged sensation may enjoy a double dose.

With daily use, Brainstorm supports neural connections in your brain for better productivity over time.

We exclusively use organic, fruiting body Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps mushrooms that are hand-harvested when their medicinal compounds are at peak concentration. Our mushrooms are dried in the sun to soak up Vitamin D before undergoing a pure, starch-free extraction process.

All ingredients are third-party lab tested for safety and stability, and mushrooms are third-party lab tested for potency.
